Biography

Gamma Prime is the alter-ego of composer & producer Paul Anthony Ross

Born in Huddersfield, UK he learnt the piano and violin as a child, playing the latter in local youth orchestras. As he progressed he struggled with reading the increasingly difficult musical notation and gave up in frustration. Some years later, his interest was rekindled as the 80s electro scene thrived allowing him to collaborate with DJs, Rappers and Beatboxers (mostly on cassette multitrack), and to gain work in a local community recording studio. Having by now learned to play by ear, his keyboard skills were an asset, and in the early 90s a collaboration with a studio client was to lead to the formation of dance act Shiva. They scored 2 Uk top 40 singles ‘Work it Out (36)’ and ‘Freedom (18)’; achievements which were sadly overshadowed by the tragic passing of singer Louise Dean.

Studying a Masters Degree in Electro-Acoustic composition at Huddersfield University would be his first exposure to compositional approaches free of the boundaries of the genre based music he was used to making. However, implementing the new concepts into his workflow proved to be a different matter in practice. A seed had been planted, but was not yet ready to blossom.

His debut album Synthesium is a realisation of new and old ideas & concepts, allowed to develop through to their natural conclusions, rather than be constrained by boundaries of genre and classification . Recognisable musical shapes are combined with freeform sonic textures. A palette of acoustic, virtual and electronic instruments is used to create ‘improbable’ ensembles that still retain an air of familiarity. Collaboration and improvisation are fundamental tools in the compositional approach. Ideas that spring from the process are embraced and nurtured to allow them to steer the ship on its course.
